In recent years, many events have impaired Japan-China relation. The Senkaku / Diaoyu Island Dispute, the Taiwan Issue, Premier koyizumi’s Shrine Visit, the history textbook controversies, the different configuration of Sino-Japanese War in the history, and the exploration of energy around the borderline are all the symptoms of the weakening of Japan-China relation. Among all the factors affecting Japan-China relations, media’s tendency is one that can not be ignored for it has a great impact on the peoples’ emotions of the two countries. So the academic circle has started to investigate how media’s tendency affects the peoples in the two countries involved.

This thesis concerned itself in this respect. The objective of this paper is to provide more academic evidence and support to develop a healthier relationship between China and Japan. It mainly explores how the Japanese media influence the Japanese people’s mentalities toward Chinese people and how the Japan-Chinese relation is affected by those particular mentalities.

Three of the most influential newspapers are chosen in this study. From a sociological perspective, a compared study is carried out among the three papers’ editorials from April to May, 2005 which is a sensitive period on how to react to the same event and how it affects the Japanese people’s mentalities toward Chinese people. Moreover,.

The whole thesis is framed as the following:

In Chapter 1, several basic concepts of media and its impact in general are introduced. Two events are chosen as cases to illustrate the existing problems in new reporting in Chapter 2. Then a comparison is executed among the editorials of the three papers in Chapter 3. In the last part a conclusion is provided and further research points are proposed.
