China began to send students abroad to Japan formally in 1896.Up to the present, the movement of studying in Japan has lasted for over 100 years, even if in time of war, the movement did not cease. During the period, these students abroad have written quite a number of literary works about Japanese, Japanesse society and their status of living and studying in Japan. has studied the evolvement and development of Japanese images in Chinese students’ eyes by unscrambling their works. Regarding the course of the movement as temporal skeleton, considering correlative political, historical, cultural background and basing on the careful reading and analysis, the dissertation connects the snippets of Japanese images, which formerly appeared in dispersive and hidden states in these works to form clear-cut Japanese images. The forming of these Japanese images lies on political and cultural communion between China and Japan as well as on the manner of observing Japan that is affected by the long-term thought. The Chinese students in Japan have described various aspects of Japan in their literary workings and so these workings reflect the transformation of Japanese society from the end of 19th century. Japan takes on different characteristics in different periods and all in all Japanese images have several types: civilized Japan, militaristic Japan and island Japan. In the process of text-analysis and image-summarization, not only can we see the Japanese images as the other, we can also observe Chinese axiology of looking into the world in reverse.
